ONYX FR: The first fireproof material for the aerospace, defence and automotive sectors.
ONYX FR: the latest creation of Markforged
The American pioneer has created the first fireproof plastic that can be “reinforced” with continuous carbon fibre.
Onyx FR, flame retardant, is the new V-0 class fire retardant material designed for industries such as aerospace, automotive and defence. This material can be used for Markforged industrial series printers (X3, X5 and X7). Indeed, traditional 3D printed plastics would burn if they ignite, but this new material is self-extinguishing. In fact, it prevents itself from burning. In addition, the new material offers unparalleled strength, superior print quality and a high quality surface finishing, while remaining fire-resistant.
What does FR mean?
“FR” is the most commonly used designation for “flame retardant”.
So what does that mean, fireproof?
Flame retardant compounds inhibit, suppress or delay the production of flames to prevent the spread of fire.
Why V-0 ?
V-0 is the UL classification for Onyx FR.
The advantages of the Onyx FR:
● Flame retardant
● High quality surface finishing
● High strength and low weight, especially when reinforced
● Not significant
● Heat and chemical resistant
● Reinforceable with continuous fibres
Markforged’s testimony:
“Manufacturers choose Markforged because our industrial 3D printers provide robust and lightweight parts for end-use at significant cost and time savings” said Jon Reilly, VP Product at Markforged. ” opening up more applications for 3D printing in the automotive, aerospace and defense sectors because it meets higher fire safety standards. When these parts are reinforced with continuous carbon fiber strands, they are as strong as aircraft grade aluminum at half their weight.”
