3D printing saves lives in the battle against Coronavirus

Digital innovation is working to oppose the Coronavirus.
Respirator valves for a resuscitation device were printed using Duraform and the ProX SLS 6100 3D printer from the American manufacturer, 3D Systems.
This is the answer to the lack of valves for respirators at the Hospital of Chiari, where on the morning of 13 March 2020, panic breaks out due to the Coronavirus emergency. There are no valves for respirators; what now? It is not possible to start the usual purchase procedure, it would be too late for patients at the hospital in Chiari.
But thanks to word of mouth and the brilliant minds of two technical engineers, Michele Faini and Marco Gavazzi, working at Lonati, a Brescia-based company and world leader in the textile machinery industry, the valves for respirators arrive ahead of time, saving the lives of many patients. How?
Thanks to the ProX SLS 6100 printer, supplied by our Treviso office, with which it has been possible to replicate models, covered by patent, that the multinational supplier would not have been able to deliver on time.
“It is motivating to see the progress that Lonati’s R&D team has made – said Alberto Baraldi, co-founder of 3DZ Brescia, the person who followed the Lonati project and explained to them how to use the machines – To have a customer using Prox 6100 for new life-saving projects alongside other 3D technologies, is the best reward we could get”.
We are pleased that the sale of our 3D printers has contributed to this chain of solidarity. It is a confirmation that in the medical and health care sector, 3D printing will be increasingly necessary. And that’s not all. It shows that, if well analysed, potentially any project can be realized with 3D printing, also called additive manufacturing.
